A Little Understanding Goes A Long Way
I was talking to a friend of mine today, and he said something that really made a lot of sense to me. He said “Dave, I thought that maybe I was going nuts. I thought nobody knew where I was coming from, and maybe I just had it all wrong. But after talking to you, I see that I am at least partly right, and I’m relieved to know that somebody understands.” Of course, being an internet marketer, I immediately made a connection between what he said and what I do. (If you haven’t started to see how everything relates to marketing, you will)
When I hear someone say something like that, it really gets me thinking.
Every one of our customers feels a bit like my friend did. They think that they’re the only ones in the world with their unique problem, and when they try to explain to someone how they feel, nobody gets it. Not their spouse, their friends or their parents. Nobody.
They are desperately seeking someone who understands them. Someone who gets it. Someone who gets them. And there you are, waiting. Waiting to tell them that you do understand, that they’re not wrong to feel the way they do, and you’re ready to help them with the perfect solution to their problem. When they realize what they’ve found, they’re so happy that they suspend their disbelief and decide to purchase your product or service hoping that they’ve finally found their solution. And totally secure in the knowledge that they have absolutely no risk, because their new best friend (you) have taken all the risk on yourself.
That’s what it’s all about. Having your marketing so dialed in that when someone reads it they say to themselves, “It’s like this was written especially for me!”. If you’ve never had that experience, believe me, it’s a real eye-opener. You’ll know what I mean when you see it.
That’s how your marketing has to be. You have to know your customer so well that you can explain their problem better than they can. Know what work they do, where they go, who they hang out with and what they like to do for fun. When you know him that well, you’ll be able to write a letter or ad directly to that individual person. And when he finds it, you’ll both be glad he did.
Your job, as far as marketing goes, is to find your customer, show him what you’ve got, and make sure he gets it. Obviously if he is looking at your ad or sales page, you’ve got something he’s interested in. Here’s the part that most people miss. If he needs it and wants it, IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE HE GETS IT! Not just so you can make a few bucks. But because you can help him solve his problem. And make money at the same time. It’s always a win-win solution.
The more people you help, the more money you’ll make.
Is that a great system, or what?
For Your Success,
Dave
