The truth is you CAN build a massive team of network
marketers using the vast power of the Internet.

But if you’re gonna make it online, there are a few
things you’ll have to acquire before you take the plunge.

You’ll need…

The right tools
The right knowledge
And you’ll have to take consistent, persistent action

That’s it.
With those 3 things, there’s no way you can fail.
It takes some longer than others, and there’s no
telling how long it’ll take you, but you can do it.
You just can’t ever quit.

Successful network marketers never quit.

All 3 of these things are vitally important for the formula
to work.

Let me explain….

Here’s what usually happens.

A new team member comes on board full of
enthusiasm and energy.

I’ll teach them about the marketing tools they have at
their disposal to grow their business and I’ll give them
all the knowledge they need to become successful
network marketers.

Most people get these things 2 things right.

Then I’ll tell them what they’ll need to do to create
constant growth in their business and I’ll give them a
goal to strive for on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

And this is where they run into trouble.

Things will generally go well for the first couple of weeks,
but by weeks 3 and 4 their enthusiasm has dwindled and
their energy is gettin’ pretty low.

They get distracted by the latest sure-fire can’t miss make a
million dollars without getting out of bed in your first 2 weeks
product put out by the Guru of the month.

They spend a bunch of money on a product they can’t
afford because they’re still chasing after a winning lottery
ticket that’s blowing down the street just out of arm’s reach.

They slow down, quit following their daily action plan and
their business grinds to a halt. Dead.

This is a HUGE mistake.

How Network Marketers Succeed

In network marketing RESULTS are created by consistent
and persistent action. Your results will be killed by chasing
after every new thing that comes out and being distracted
from taking action every day towards your goals.

Keep it simple.

The top producers are the ones that master the basics and
then continue to take consisten action day after day. Then
the leaders teach those basics to their new team members.
That’s how teams of successful network marketers are built.

Do the things that bring you results consistently and you’ll
see a steady flow of new prospects into your business building
funnel. And that will cause consistent and measurable results.

Keep doing the basics consistently and you’re sure to see
results. That’s what professional network marketers do.

THEY tell you that you’ll just end up broke.

And then?

Well, then they’ll hang around and watch what happens.
Just in case you run into a hurdle.
So they can say “I told you so”.
They won’t offer to help you.

THEY live life passively.
THEY wait around for something better to come along.
THEY make excuses for their lack of ambition.
THEY blame anything and everything outside themselves
for their current conditions.
THEY are resigned to their fate.

What a tragedy.

The only reason they say and do those things is
because they’re too scared to dream for themselves.
And they sure as hell aren’t going to take any risk to
go after a better life.

But you’re the type of person that wants to make the
world a better place. Not just for yourself. For everyone.
You’ll take action to make your life better and you’ll help
as many other people as possible make their lives better
too.

Do you truly understand the difference between you and THEM?
I do.

Here’s what’s funny about it.

The same people who do everything in their power to
make sure you don’t take a risk to make your life better
are the same ones who will shower you with praise and
say things like “I knew you could do it!” AFTER you’ve
gone through all the blood, sweat and tears to make it
happen.

Free Network Marketing Leads

Seriously folks. No free MLM leads. No free autopilot either, but that’s another article. 

Where in hell does this stuff come from, anyway? Glad you asked. It comes from the fact that “free” is one of the most powerfully persuasive words in the english language. You’d think that by the time of graduating from high school the average person would have realized that nothing in the world is now nor ever has been, in fact “free”.

In order to bypass the thinking part of the brain (mammalian) and get right on down to the gut-level part of the brain (the reptilian) we as marketers use language such as “free”. There are lots of other words that are used very effectively to do the same thing. But this isn’t an article about marketing language. It’s an article about network marketing leads.

All Network Marketing Leads Must Be Paid For

Just like everything else in the world, network marketing leads have a cost associated with them. The best thing you can say is that the leads have no immediate out of pocket cost. In other words, you don’t have to fork over any cash right now in order to get them. But sooner or later, you’re gonna pay for your network marketing leads one way or another. 

Let’s consider your time, for example. Now I don’t know what your job is, whether or not you went to college, or even what you think your time is worth. Let’s just say that if you’re working from home, your time is worth at the very least $25 per hour. I think that’s kinda low myself, but different folks have different ways of looking at things and for many people that’s a decent amount of money.

How many hours do you think it’s gonna take you to figure out how to write a decent ad? Where are you gonna place that ad? If you put your ad up on a newsletter, Facebook, or YouTube, guess what? You’ll have to pay. So those don’t exactly work, do they? Uh, no.

Try again. What’s that? You say you’re gonna use social media? Cool. Let’s take a look at that, shall we?

Network Marketing Leads You Get From Social Media

Are Some Of The Most Expensive Leads You’ll Ever Get

What?!

Yep, I said it. Network marketing leads you get from social media are some of the most expensive leads you’ll ever get.

Why, you ask? 

Remember that $25 an hour your time is worth? Well, let’s say that you build a fan page. Oops, you don’t know how. So you go ahead and buy the latest, greatest, build a fan page in 37 seconds flat or your money back fan page building software. $47 spent. Already your leads aren’t free, and you haven’t even got the page up yet. 

Let’s further say you build a seriously kick-ass page in just under 4 hours. There goes another $100. You’re down almost $150 and still no leads. Put up some pics, make a few posts and like some comments and shares. Let’s be conservative and say you spend 10 hours doing that. $250 up in smoke.

By now you’d have to get at least 100 network marketing leads, right? Probably not. But let’s be charitable and say that you’ve actually done much better than that and you’ve pulled in an astounding 400 leads. And it only took you 3 months to do it! (ok, I know that 10 hours over 3 months is astoundingly low, but I’m only counting the time you were actively engaged in your business, not the rest of the time when you were just screwing off)

Using that math and assuming those numbers (which again are very optimistic) your MLM leads have cost you 3 months and $1 per lead. That’s a guaranteed way to go broke, friends. Not that $1 leads are bad depending on your conversions, but the worst part is the tracking. Those leads are going to be next to impossible to track. Meaning you have no idea what it was that compelled your new prospect to opt-in to your list. 

And that’s no good at all.

When it comes to generating network marketing leads, no matter which method you use, if you can’t track it, you can’t repeat it. If you can’t repeat it and improve on it, you’re pretty much shooting in the dark all the time and your chances for success drop precipitously.

Bombs away! Right into the crapper. 

As one of my favorite gurus is wont to say, “Amateurs try, Pros track”. Do yourself a favor and track your results.

 There ARE Ways To Get Inexpensive Network Marketing Leads

About a year into my network marketing career one of the up and coming gurus of the time (who was big into Google adwords) said that if you can get your network marketing leads for less than $2, you’re doing very well and can’t help but make money. Yep, that’s right. $2 a lead!

Let me ask you something.

If a freakin’ guru is willing to pay up to $2 for a lead, and he’s happy to get them at that price, what makes you think that you’re gonna blow the lid off this whole network marketing lead generation thing and get them for FREE?! It just ain’t gonna happen, so give it up. And please don’t give me any crap about your favorite guru telling you all about how they get all their leads for free and got stinky rich using their “secret” methods.

It’s all BS.

They know there’s always a cost associated with getting network marketing leads. They also know that you’re more apt to give them your money if they tell you something is gonna be free, easy, or both. Even if you’re using an attraction marketing system, there’s still some costs involved.

So there you have it folks. Another dirty rotten secret revealed.

There ain’t no such thing as free network marketing leads.

Ever wonder what the heck you should do?
Ok, that’s an easy one. Is there anyone who hasn’t?

It’s still kinda early for me, and I just feel a little blah.
I’ve had some pretty intense coaching sessions lately and
I guess I’ve stirred up some stuff from my subconscious that
not only was I not paying attention to, I didn’t even know it
was there.

So I’ve been going through these wild emotional swings.
It’s really weird, cuz I’m not usually a very emotional guy.
I do my best to keep myself on an even keel, not getting to
down when things don’t go the way I’ve planned, and not
bouncing off the walls when things go right.

I’ll tell ya one thing though.
Starting and running a business will force you to face every
little thing you don’t like about yourself. All the stuff you
thought you grew out of, or had gotten over.

Wanna know the truth?

That stuff is still there, just waiting for you to try to break
out of your comfort zone and take some action that will
drastically change your life. Of course those changes will
be for the better, but your subconscious doesn’t know that.

All your subconscious knows is that you’re going to go
beyond the borders of what’s familiar and safe. Your
subconscious wants to protect you. Not necessarily from any
bodily harm. Just from pain, whether it’s physical or emotional.

And it will do anything to protect you.
Including sabotaging all of your efforts to succeed in your home
business.

Your subconscious works 24/7, 365. It never sleeps, it doesn’t make
judgements and can’t tell the difference between a positive thought
and a negative one. It works only on absolutes. It doesn’t know
whether something actually happened to you or if you just imagined
it.

And since it runs in the background, invisible to the conscious mind,
it can’t be dealt with head-on. Ya gotta approach it in stealth mode.
No amount of reason will change your subconscious mind.

You know what will?
Imagination.
Imagination driven home with strong emotion.

That’s where visualization and self-talk come in.

You see, if you constantly tell yourself how great you
are, how you’re always improving and how you’re going to
be one of the top producers in your network marketing company,
your subconscious mind has no choice but to believe it.

When you spend several minutes as you drift off to sleep thinking
about and visualizing the life you want to live, the car you want
to drive and the home you want to live in, your subconscious mind
will go to work to get it for you.

You’ll be compelled to take the actions you must take to succeed
because if you don’t, you’ll start to feel uncomfortable. In fact,
you’ll start to feel so uncomfortable that you won’t be able to fight
it and you’ll have to get to work.

Wouldn’t that be a welcome change from having to fight to get
yourself to take the actions you know you’ll have to take if you
ever want to get to where you want to be?

I think so.

Would you believe that 15 minutes ago I couldn’t think of
anything to say and was about ready to just go to bed?  :)

Although that’s a great book and I’ve read it a few times myself,
I was thinking of a different one.

it in your life.

You owe it to yourself to read this book.
Besides, it’s short.
And cheap.
Leave it in the bathroom if you have to, just read it.

Without Picking Up The Phone

That’s right. It’s impossible to build a network marketing team if you don’t actually pick up your phone and talk to people. And I can prove it.

Believe it or not, there are people out there (that know better) who will actually try to tell you that they’ve built these massive downlines without ever calling anyone on the phone. They say it in a hundred different ways, in different fonts, type sizes, colors, etc., etc.

It’s a bunch of bullshit. 

And I, for one, am sick of it.

Really.

Is Network Marketing REALLY A Relationship Business?

I think most would say it is. After all, you can’t roam around the internet much without running into this type of thinking. But in reality, (as opposed to the fantasy land that most network marketers live in) network marketing is a SALES business. 

That’s right, Dorothy. This ain’t OZ, and you can develop all of the relationships you want to, but you know what? If none of those “relationships” spawns a paying customer that actually buys some of the stuff you so nicely “shared” with them, you won’t make a dime and you’ll be gone faster than a bucket of chicken at a Jenny Craig convention. Of course you’ve got to have a marketing system. You’re still gonna need the phone.

But this post isn’t about the big fat lie that there are no sales involved in Network Marketing. That’s another post.

This post is being written to shine the harsh light of truth on the steaming pile of copy that claims “You can (fill in the blank with your favorite recruiting hype) without ever picking up the phone!”

What a load.

How Is A Network Marketing TEAM Built?

Assuming that network marketing is a business built on relationships, doesn’t it stand to reason that you’re going to have to talk to the people on your team?

What kind of team doesn’t have verbal communication? Do you mean to tell me that you’d say that a team that communicated only by email, got all of their training on a weekly webinar from a guy they have a snowball’s chance in hell of ever meeting in person (unless of course, you fly across the country to attend an event) would be anywhere near cohesive? Would they feel like a team? Would they be one big, happy family?

I think not.

I Believe That A Strong Network Marketing Team Is Built On Communication

And yes, I really do mean by talking to people. 

On the phone.

You see, contrary to popular belief in most network marketing circles, the phone really is a good thing.

I simply don’t know why it gets such a bad rap. If network marketers had any idea how much more proficient they would be at their chosen profession just by learning how to use the phone more effectively in their business, they’d never again have anything to do with someone so obviously mistaken when they hear the obscene term “auto-pilot”.

And in network marketing, “auto-pilot” is practically the holy grail of copy. 

If you can squeeze “auto-pilot” anywhere into your copy, you’re practically guaranteed to get people to at least take a look at your stuff. (the more astute of you will notice how I artfully dropped the useless term into my own copy)

So Where Does Network Marketing Go From Here?

Straight into the crapper if newbies don’t start to realize how naive it is to believe that they can start a network marketing business and automatically sign people up, rise to the top of their compensation plan and live happily ever after without ever picking up the phone.

Well, there you have it folks. Whether you like it or not, it’s the truth.

A while back a friend of mine asked me where I got the nickname DarkSide. It came about when I was active on Better Networker. I got it because I was always pointing out (like I have in this article) the truth about network marketing. Even though some didn’t like it. Even though I caught hell for it. Even though I got into some serious knock-down drag-put forum brawls over it. I still call it like I see it.

That’s not a bad thing to be known for, is it? 

I’m glad you enjoyed this little peek at the truth.

At first I was a little disappointed because I didn’t see anything happening.

Turns out that it just doesn’t happen instantaneously. Go figure.

Anyway, after waiting overnight and then rechecking everything, I discovered that my latest blog post had indeed been included on the TribePro site. Sweet. I’m not sure exactly how everything works yet. For instance, I don’t know if everything I post to all of my different social sites will be uploaded automatically if I share them through Onlywire, if that’s something I have to set up, or if those posts have to be handled in some other way.

At this point I’d have to say that TribePro is doing what it’s supposed to be doing and will continue to do so. Which means that if I consistently post new content it will be shared all over the place by the people that are auto-syndicating me. And that’s a good thing.

Man, am I glad that year is over. Yep. Not gonna miss 2011 at all.

I guess we all have to go through times in our lives that we could have done without. The funny thing is how all the stuff that happens seems like such a big deal when nothing really holds any weight at all except for what an individual gives it.

So what’s with all the fear?

Ok, I know the scientific answers to the question. But seriously. I know that no harm can come to me by making a phone call. Prospecting should be no more difficult than calling a local business to find out their hours of operation. What’s the worst that could happen? The person on the other end might say NO me? Hang up? Shout obscenities?

So what?

The truth is that there are a lot of people out there who could really use some help in these troubled economic times.

While I was prospecting today, I spoke to a woman who is serious about starting a home-based business. She’s on disability and goes in for knee surgery tomorrow. She wants to do something from home because she can’t work and would rather start building something that she and her son can work on together to support themselves while he goes to college. He’s going to be studying marketing. 

The point I’m making is that if I hadn’t been prospecting the other day, I never would have called her. She wouldn’t have called me back, and she probably never would have been introduced to my business.

All because I was too chicken to pick up the phone and start calling.

Prospecting Isn’t As Hard As It Looks

It wasn’t the easiest thing to do when I first started. As a matter of fact, it’s not my favorite thing to do now, either. But I know that the path to success lies beyond what I don’t want to do. Like it or not, if I want to be more successful in the network marketing and direct sales game, I’m gonna have to talk to people on the phone. That means prospecting. There’s just no way around it.

Time after time I’ve heard marketers scoff at the idea of buying leads and making prospecting calls. Attraction marketing is all the rage and everyone and his brother is talking about how you can sign people up into your business on auto-pilot. The funny thing is, the same people will tell you that network marketing is a “relationship business” in their next blog post.

Say again?

For the record, a lead that you buy from a professional lead generating company will cost you up to 10 times less than one you generate on your own, and you can get as many as you can afford every single day, delivered right into your dialing system, ready for your next prospecting session. Not only that, they’re in exactly the same position whether they fill out a form you made, or one the lead company put up. If you’re new (and even if you’re not) you should pay attention to these facts.

“Free” leads are some of the most expensive leads you’ll ever find.

When you add up all the time it takes to finally get to the point where you’re generating enough leads to keep you busy prospecting on a daily basis, you’ll have spent a whole lot more money and wasted even more time than if you’d just paid for them and started dialing.

No Prospecting = No Phone Skills

One other point before I forget. Let’s just say for the sake of argument that you’re a lead generating phenom and you start getting 10 new leads a day from your Facebook page or whatever. Will you even call them? Or are you still too afraid to pick up the phone? If you do call them you’ll probably blow it because you don’t know what to say. Just because you didn’t want to do any prospecting. And now, when you really need those words to flow effortlessly from your lips to the eager ears of your just about to sign up prospect, you don’t know what to say. So you lose her.

You’ll be far better off if you start buying leads from day one and call at least 5 of them a day. And I mean actually talk to 5. Leaving a message doesn’t count, and neither does no answer. I mean having a minimum of 5 conversations per day. Real prospecting calls to people who are interested in starting a business at home.

Not only will you find some team members, you’ll get a first-class education in how to handle people on the phone. Think of how much money you’ll lose and how many people you’ll let down if you don’t learn how to use the phone effectively. Once you think it through, you’ll realize that you’d better practice a whole lot before you’re in the big game. And the only way to practice is to start prospecting now.

The reason top producers are so effective is because they took the time to develop the skills they needed to succeed in their chosen profession of network marketing. You do want to have a huge downline like theirs someday, don’t you?

Good.

Then pick up the phone and start calling leads. Because your business is Prospecting.

Where the heck have we been?

Well, we’ve been here, there and dang near everywhere. Tried new things, met new people and learned a lot. But now we’re back, and none the worse for wear.

In fact, things are really looking up. The future’s so bright, we gotta wear shades.

Fact is, a lot of what we were doing just wasn’t working out as planned. It seemed that no plan we could come up with would work. Over and over with different techniques, strategies and tactics. And while we were getting results, they just weren’t living up to our expectations.

Until now.

So here’s the deal

I don’t like a lot of what is happening in networking.

I’m not the only one, but sometimes it sure does feel that way. I’m getting back to the basics. Simple things, done well, that build the foundation of a successful direct sales business.

I’ve tried all the flashy stuff, the courses, the buzzwords. You name it, I’ve seen it and probably tried it. I found out that a lot of stuff is difficult depending on your background, but even if you rule the tech world, the only reason to even use all that stuff is to get people to talk to about your business.

And if you don’t know how to talk to them, you’re gonna blow it when they show up anyway.

Be on the lookout for more stuff to come. I’ve had several false starts as I’ve figured out which way I should be going, but my path is clear now. I have to back up a little in order to move forward, but that’s part of the game.

I’m just glad I didn’t go any further before realizing it was time to change direction.

It’s not that I don’t want to get things done, it’s just that there’s always something else I’d rather be doing.

For instance, just before I started writing this, I got caught up in Facebook again. I’m not saying that I shouldn’t use Facebook from time to time to promote things and interact with people. It’s just that in my line of work Facebook is a tool, nothing more. If I hadn’t gone into marketing, I wouldn’t even have a Facebook account. Or any of the other social media accounts I have, for that matter.

So I spent too much time on Facebook yet again. Of course I know the reason. It’s because I didn’ t block ou

t a certain amount of time to get on there, do what I wanted to get done and get out. When it comes to social media, you can waste enormous amounts of time screwing around and it feels like working. But it’s not.

Best thing to do? Schedule your Facebook and other social media time just like you schedule everything else. If you don’t schedule everything else, my suggestion is that you start. If you’ve ever wonder how some people seem to get so much done and end up succeeding on a level that far exceeds most people, it’s because they know how to effectively use their time. And that means scheduling their activities.

If you don’t know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it at any given time, you could probably be making better use of your time.
